Overview
dart_ping is a multi-platform network utility that enables native ping functionality for desktop and Android applications. It allows developers to check network connectivity status by sending ICMP echo requests to target hosts, providing real-time feedback on reachability and latency. Designed for cross-platform use, it supports Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux, making it ideal for apps requiring reliable network diagnostics. The package integrates seamlessly with Flutter projects via a simple add command and leverages platform-specific implementations for optimal performance.
Use cases
- Checking device connectivity to remote servers
- Monitoring network latency in real time
- Validating internet access during app startup
- Integrating network health checks into monitoring tools
- Testing local network responsiveness
Key features
- Cross-platform support across major OSes
- Native ICMP ping implementation
- Low-level network reachability testing
- Simple API integration with Flutter
- Real-time response time measurement
Suitable for
- Network diagnostic tools
- IoT device connectivity apps
- Mobile and desktop apps needing network health checks
- System monitoring utilities
- Apps requiring robust connection validation
Considerations
- Requires appropriate system permissions on some platforms
- May be blocked by firewalls or network policies
- Limited to ICMP-based pings (no TCP/HTTP alternatives)
- Platform-specific behavior may vary
- Not suitable for high-frequency polling due to system constraints
