Package Overview

Package selection guidance compiled from public package information, community data, and project usage.

flame_test is a Flutter/Dart package designed to simplify testing of applications built with the Flame game engine. It provides utility classes and helpers that enable developers to write unit and integration tests for game logic, components, and systems. The package supports testing across multiple platforms including Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux, ensuring consistent behavior in test environments. With flame_test, developers can simulate game loops, manage asynchronous operations, and verify interactions within their games without requiring a full runtime environment.

Use cases

  • Testing game logic and state transitions
  • Verifying component behavior in isolation
  • Simulating game loop execution
  • Validating physics and collision detection
  • Testing input handling and event responses

Key features

  • Built-in test helpers for Flame components
  • Support for async testing with game loop simulation
  • Cross-platform test compatibility
  • Integration with Dart's test framework
  • Mocking of game context and services

Suitable for

  • Flame game developers
  • Teams practicing test-driven development
  • Projects requiring reliable regression testing
  • Developers writing unit tests for game mechanics
  • Those aiming to improve code quality through automated testing

Considerations

  • Requires familiarity with Flame engine concepts
  • May need additional setup for complex game scenarios
  • Limited to Flame-based applications
  • Test coverage depends on thorough test design
  • Not suitable for UI or visual rendering tests

Features

The goal of the Flame Engine is to provide a complete set of out-of-the-way solutions for common problems that games developed with Flutter might share.

Some of the key features provided are:

  • A game loop.
  • A component/object system (FCS).
  • Effects and particles.
  • Collision detection.
  • Gesture and input handling.
  • Images, animations, sprites, and sprite sheets.
  • General utilities to make development easier.

On top of those features, you can augment Flame with bridge packages. Through these libraries, you will be able to access bindings to other packages, including custom Flame components and helpers, in order to make integrations seamless.

Flame officially provides bridge libraries to the following packages:
